On 8 December 2012, the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries decided to ban imports of beef from Brazil because of a case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BCE) in Brazilian cattle. The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) ran tests on a 13-years-old female cow that died in the state of Parana in December 2010 and did not confirm the disease.
