Labour market access

On 1 April 2012 a reform of the German recognition process for foreign education certificates came into force.

Under the new regime, foreigners of all nationalities are granted the right to request an evaluation of their education certificate. Decisions on the recognition of the certificates have to be issued within three months of the filing of the request.

Prior to the change, the possiblity for the recognition of education certificates had often been linked to the nationality of the applicant. While a general recognition process had been accessible for citizens of EU/EFTA-countries, no such process had been in place for citizens of many other jurisdictions.
