Import tariff

On 22 July 2010, the government of Bangladesh announced its budget for 2010-2011.
Import duty decreases:

  • Import duty exemptions down to a common level of 3 percent have been granted to ceramic rollers, laminar air flow equipment, printers and industrial vacuum cleaners. A reduction down to 1 percent has been granted for plotters and fibre dispositing plants.
  • Specific import duties have been removed to zero percent for products such as fibreboard, air conditioners and turntables.
  • Import tariffs have been lowered to 5 and 12 percent for prodcuts suchas milk powder, used textiles, and electricity generation equipment.

Import duty increases:

  • Import tariff exemptions have been withdrawn on the followingproducts: copper tubes and pipes, handsaw blades, electricitytransformers, electricity meters as well as bobbins & spools made ofpulp or paper. Up from a common level of 3 percent, these products arenow charged between 5 and 25 percent.
  • Specific import duties have been increased to 20, 30 or 60 percent for products such as cocnuts, plastic sheets, woven fabrics, sanitary towels, knitted fabrics, aluminium foil and certain furniture.
  • Import tariffs have been increased to 12 or 25 percent for products such as maize, film, metalized yarn, certain screws and electrodes.
  • Import duties of up to 4 US dollars per accounting unit have beenimposed on cracker biscuits, certain sugars, scratch cards, as well asframes and mountings for goggles made of plastic or other materials.

Export duty imposition:

  • An export duty of 10 percent has been imposed on tobacco products. Prior to the change, these exports had been duty free.
