State loan

On 29 March 2020, the National Bank for Economic and Social Development of Brazil (i.e. BNDES by its acronym in Portuguese) launched a new credit line to support the local health services industry on its fight against the Coronavirus pandemic. The new financial scheme counts with BRL 2 billion (over USD 392 million). The scheme targets preferentially companies in the health services sector, however, it will also contemplate the approval of loans to companies from other sectors that seek to convert their production into equipment and supplies for health industries.

The credit lines seek to increase by 10% the availability of ICU beds, by 50% of the availability of pulmonary respirators and by 20% the total existences of monitors. To achieve these goals, the development bank offers loans of up to BRL 150 million per economic group (USD 29.4 million) every six months with a term of up to 60 months including a grace period of 3 to 24 months. The interest is to be calculated based on the financial cost plus a 1% BNDES remuneration and credit risk of up to 4.26% per year.

The announcement also refers to another credit line announced earlier in March that targets SMEs (please, see related state acts).

The credit lines will be available until 30 September 2020.
