Import tariff

On 22 August 2014, upon the advice of the International Trade Administration Commission of South Africa (ITAC), the South African Revenue Service (SARS) issued Notice R. 632, splitting tariff heading 3207.20 into two eight-digit level tariff lines - HS 3207.20.10 for vitrifiable enamels and similar preparations and 3207.20.20 for vitrifiable glazes, engobes (slips) and similar preparations - and introducing a new 5% duty on the former. Imports from EU, EFTA and SADC member states remain exempt from the duty.

The ITAC decided to introduce the tariff on the basis that the duty will eliminate price disadvantages experienced by the domestic industry manufacturing vitrifiable enamels. The ITAC will review the duty after a period of three years, to determine its impact of the duty on the full industry value chain.

The measure took effect on 22 August 2014 and applies to the Southern African Customs Union (SACU).
