Export ban

The United Republic of Tanzania has banned the export of raw tanzanite gemstone to encourage the development of the local processing industry.

The ban was announced by the Minister of Energy and Minerals and is effective from 2 April 2010. Dealers who violate the ban will have their consignment confiscated and licences nullified. Tanzania is the world's only source of tanzanite.
