On 30 December 2015, the Indian Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved an increased budget of INR 5000 crore (~USD 751 millions) for the Grid Connected Rooftop Solar Systems programme under the National Solar Mission . The budget, which earlier was capped at INR 600 crore (~USD 90 millions) for the 12th five year plan, ending in March 2017, has been increased to INR 1750 crore (~USD 263 millions) for this period, while a budget of INR 3250 crore (~USD 488 millions) has been approved to be utilized for the period 2017-18 to 2019-20.

Under the programme, a capital subsidy of 30%-70% is provided on solar systems. Moreover, the guidelines state that only indigenously manfactured PV modules can be used in these solar systems, thereby subsidizing local manufacturing.
