On 3 October 2012 the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine approvedResolution No. 939 'On Amendment of Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 1729 of 27 December 2011 and Abolishment of Certain Acts of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine'.
As a step on the way to liberalising the Ukrainian gas market, it eliminated the monopoly on sales of natural gas imported into Ukraine by the National Joint Stock Company 'Naftogaz Ukrainy' and other enterprises producing nitrogenous fertilizers.
Before the approval of Resolution No. 939, the imported into Ukraine natural gas was exclusivelymarketed on the local market by Neftogaz and its subsidiary 'Gaz Ukrainy'. In addition, only a limited number of enterprises producing nitrogen fertilizers, determined by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, were allowed to directly import and use natural gas for their own purposes.
