Consumption subsidy

Some local governments are reported to subsidise purchases of cars since April 2009.

The measure applies to eco-friendly cars and thus supports the local car industry which is strong in production of electric car models.

Measures supporting the purchases include direct subsidies and tax exemptions. The Kanagawa prefecture provides almost half of the amount of subsidies in whole Japan (ca. Yen 300,000) and also invests in the electric charging infrastructure. 'Quick chargers' should be installed in 30 locations by 2010, aiming for 1,000 charging outlets within the prefecture by 2014.
