Import tariff

The government in July 2009 removed the temporary 500 Egyptian pounds per tonne duty imposed in January 2009 on white and refined sugar imports. The duty was in addition to an already existing 10% duty on white sugar and was to last for a year. It was introduced to stabilize the price of sugar on the local market.

The import duty exemption was supposed to last till the end of December 2009 but has been extended to June 2010.
