On 14 October 2011, Sri Lanka increased the Special Commodity Levy on imports of green gram from Rs. 15/kg to Rs. 30/kg. and on crushed or ground chillies from Rs. 25/kg. to Rs. 40/kg. Also the levy was introduced on black gram at Rs. 90/kg., on cowpea at Rs. 75/kg. and on Millet at Rs. 30/kg. This levy is valid for 4 months. The Special Commodity Levy is a composite duty on the product and no other tax, duty, cess etc. is applicable on the said product.
According to the press note of the ministry of finance, the levy has been introduced/increased to protect and encourage domestic farmers.
