On 6 May 2009, the Government of India vide Notification No. 104 (RE-2009) / 2004-2009 permitted the export of non-Basmati rice in specified quantities to 21 countries, during July-October 2008-09.
The total quantity of non-Basmati rice exports allowed is 1,000,000 MTs.
The rice was to be procured by specified Public Sector Undertakings from rice mills with surplus rice/paddy, apparently in a manner such as to not affect the overall price situation of rice.
Export of non-basmati rice had previously been banned through notifications issued in October 2007, and February 2008.
