On 28 May 2015, the Indonesian Ministry of Industry announced it would soon issue a regulation erasing import duties on shipbuilding components which cannot be produced within the country.
According to the Ministry, this move would enable the industry to accelerate. In the past, the shipbuilding sector has managed to produce merely 100 ships per year, having suffered from 5-12% import duties and a 10% value-added tax.
The necessary regulation has not yet come into force, as it is "merely waiting for the president's signature".
