ANNOUNCEMENT 29 Jan 2015In January 2015, the government of the Russian Federation announced an alteration to its export prohibitions.
NUMBER OF INTERVENTIONS
On its meeting held on January 29, 2015, the Russian Government approved Draft Federal Law "On Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of the Russian Federation with regard to improving the state regulation in the field of genetic engineering".
The bill imposes a ban on the cultivation and breeding of genetically modified plants and animals, with the exception of their use in research work. It also proposed the Government to be conceded the right to prohibit the imports into Russia of these organisms and products.
Ninety five percent of the genetically modified seeds in the world belong to American producers.
In order the new draft law to enter into force, it must be subsequently approved by the State Duma on three readings, by the Federation Council and by the President of the Russian Federation.
