Conflicting reactions to new fees on imported steel
Egypt imposes temporary tariff on steel imports to protect local industry
According to local press reports, on 14 October 2014 the Minister of Industry and Foreign Trade Mounir Fakhry Abdel Nour issued a decree imposing temporary protective fee on imported steel at the amount of 7.3% per tonne, but not less than EGP 290 per tonne. The decision is to remain in force for a period of 200 days. The purpose of this temporary state measure is 'to protect the steel industry in Egypt from the significant increase in steel imports'.
