On 29 April 2014, the Indonesian Ministry of Education passed Regulation 31 restricting the services of international schools in the country.
According to the regulation, international schools will be split into LPAs (foreign education institutions) and SPKs (joint cooperation schools). Whereas the former will be allowed to be called 'international' schools, the latter will be forced to change their names (art. 35 of regulation 31/2014).
LPAs need to be affiliated with a foreign embassy/entity and only students holding that nationality will be allowed to attend.
SPKs, on the other hand, are required in the regulation to provide studies on the Indonesian culture and Islam for local students.
The regulation came into force on the day it was issued. However, schools had until1 December 2014 to comply with the new restrictions.
The list of affected trading partners is based on the known international schools which would fall under the LPA-classification.
