Tariffs on imported tyres have been increased from 10 percent to 40 percent by the Federal Government. In 2007, the tariff had been reduced to 10 percent and, according to local manufacturers, this contributed to a decline of the sector, the unemployment of 30,000 Nigerians, and foreign exchange losses of $650million. News reports suggest that the plight of the sole remaining tyre manufacturer in Nigeria (Dunlop) contributed to the government's decision.
