On 22 August 2014, upon the advice of the International Trade Administration Commission of South Africa (ITAC), the South African Revenue Service (SARS) issued Notice R. 633, introducing the import duty on wire of iron or non-alloy steel, plated or coated with other base metals(HS 7217.30) at 10%. Imports from EU, EFTA and SADC member states remain exempt from the duty.
The ITAC levied the duty based on the findings that, amongst others, the increased level of imports is eroding the market share of SACU producers of breadwire.
The measure took effect on 22 August 2014 and applies to the Southern African Customs Union (SACU).
