On 18 July 2014, upon the advice of the International Trade Administration Commission of South Africa (ITAC), the South African Revenue Service (SARS) issued Notice R. 555, inserting a new tariff heading for stranded wire, of wire which is plated, coated or clad with copper-zinc base alloys (brasses) (HS 7312.10.10), thereby eliminating the import duties on that product. Previously, imports from countries other than EU, EFTA and SADC member states incurred a 5% duty.
The ITAC found that there are no local manufacturers of the abovementioned product within the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) and that the existing tariff structure places an unnecessary cost burden on the industry manufacturing pneumatic tyres.
The measure took effect on 18 July 2014 and applies to SACU.
