Anti-dumping

On June 21, 2013, the South African authorities initiated an anti-dumping investigation on imports of soda ash from the United States of America into the Southern African Customs Union, following a complaint by the customs union's sole manufacturer of soda ash, Botswana Ash (Pty) Ltd (Botash). The product subject to investigation is classified under HS code 2836.20.00.

On December 20, 2013, the South African authorities imposed a provisional anti-dumping duty on imports of soda ash from the United States of America. The rate of duty ranges from 8% to 40%, depending on the exporting company.

On May 26, 2014, the International Trade Administration Commission of South Africa recommended imposing a definitive anti-dumping duty at the same rates of the provisional one and the Trade Minister followed that recommendation.

On June 19, 2014, the South African authorities imposed a definitive anti-dumping duty on imports of soda ash from the United States of America. The rate of the duty remains 40%, at the exception of the companies TATA Chemicals and OCI Chemical Corporation whose exports are subject to a duty of 8% and 21% respectively.

On 26 April 2019, the Internation Trade Administration Commission of South Africa initiated a sunset review of the definitive antidumping duty imposed on imports of soda ash from the United States. This follows the application lodged by the Government of Botswana on behalf of the company Botswana Ash (Pty) Ltd. The application is additionally supported by the company Sappi Southern Africa (Pty) Ltd.
