Import tariff quota

On 5 April 2022, the Trade Commission of MERCOSUR adopted Directive 24/22 allowing Argentina to establish a temporary 2% import duty on domestic sewing machines classified under tariff subheading NCM 8452.10.00. The new duty applies to a quota of 150'000 units. Prior to this legislation, no import tariff-rate quota was applied to this product.

According to the WTO Tariff Download Facility, the applicable average import tariff outside the quota is 20%.

Directive 24/22 only applies to Argentina for a period of 365 days and it is to be adopted before 4 June 2022. Following the GTA's conservative approach, the implementation date of this action was set for 3 June 2022.

The tariff-rate quotas granted by MERCOSUR under the policy framework established by Resolution GMC 49/19 and its updates apply to countries outside MERCOSUR.

MERCOSUR's Directives
In Argentina, since 2014, all Directives adopted by the MERCOSUR concerning import tariff-rate quotas adopted under the policy framework established by Resolution GMC 08/08 and its updates are adopted by a simplified procedure not requiring its publication on the Official Gazette.
