On 9 May 2022, the UK government announced additional duties of 35% on the import of a number of goods originating from Russia and Belarus. The decision is taken in response to these countries’ attacks on Ukraine.
The products that are subject to additional duties include but are not limited to nickel, plastics, organic and inorganic chemicals, platinum and palladium. According to the announcement from the Department for International Trade, the new import tariffs will cover £1.4 billion worth of goods.
Previously, in March 2022 and in April 2022, the government imposed additional duties on several goods from Russia and Belarus (see related state acts). The present decision constitutes the third package of goods that will be subject to additional duties.
In this context, Secretary of State for International Trade, Anne-Marie Trevelyan said: “This far-reaching package of sanctions will inflict further damage on the Russian war machine. It is part of a wider coordinated effort by the many countries around the world who are horrified by Russia’s conduct and determined to bring to bear our economic might to persuade Putin to change course.”
