Production subsidy

On 11 January 2022, the Japanese Agriculture and Livestock Industries Corporation (ALIC) announced the results of its survey of the starch production market and resulting changes to a subsidy programme for domestic producers adopted in 2021. ALIC stated that it was reducing the budget of the scheme by 21.8%, from JPY 2.478 billion to 1.939 billion (USD 21.5 million to USD 15.3 million) for the year 2021.

The subsidy amount is calculated in an ex post fashion, and is awarded to domestic producers of starch in Japan based on how many tonnes of product they sold. It is intended to encourage domestic production over imports.
