On 3 March 2022, the U.S. Department of Treasury announced imposing sanctions on several Russian online media outlets due to their connection with Russian intelligence services and their role in the destabilisation of Ukraine by spreading “false narratives” and “falsely” justifying the Russian activities. Specifically, the U.S. has frozen the assets of these entities.

Entities that are imposed sanctions by the U.S. Treasury, Office of Foreign Assets Control are Strategic Culture Foundation, Odna Rodyna, Rhythm of Eurasia, Journal Kamerton, InfoRos, SouthFront, United World International, New Eastern Outlook, Oriental Review, Geopolitica, and NewsFront (Ukraine).

According to the announcement, this decision is taken in coordination with the other G7 allies to demonstrate the support for Ukraine. Previously, the EU imposed restrictions on Russian-controlled media outlets RT and Sputnik. The present decision of the U.S. does not include any sanctions against the two news outlets.

The U.S. Treasury also announced imposing sanctions on some Russian oligarchs including Alisher Usmanov, Nikolay Tokarev, and Yevgeniy Prigozhin.
