On 27 February 2022,  the Canadian government announced the closure of its airspace towards aircraft chartered or operated by Russia. The airspace above Canada's territorial waters is included in the ban. The measure entered into force immediately and is effective until further notice. 

According to the news release, the intervention is implemented as a response to Russia's attack on Ukraine.

In this context, Canada's Minister of Transport, Omar Alghabra, stated: "The Government of Canada condemns Russia’s aggressive actions and we will continue to take action to stand with Ukraine".
