On January 27, 2014, India's Ministry of Finance issued Notification No. 03/2014-Customs, which imposes an export duty on iron ore pellets (HS 2601.12.10) of 5 per cent. Previously, pellets could be exported free of duties.
According to an official statement, this tariff increase was promopted by a surge in iron ore pellet exports in 2013 that lead to concerns about shortage of iron ore for the domestic industry.
The export duty was withdrawn on 4 January 2016.
