On May 16, 2013, the Mexican Ministry of the Economy gazetted a regulation that established a 300,000-tonne quota for chicken to be imported free of duties, until December 31, 2013. According to a ministry official, the measure was intended to spur imports from countries other than the USA and Canada (which are not affected as NAFTA members), such as Brazil.
