Import tariff

On May 28, 2010, the Minister of Finance of Malawi delivered his budget statement for the year 2010/2011, which introduced new import duties on used motor vehicles.

Additional duties are levied depending of the age of the car at the time of importation: for cars under 8 years old nothing changed, but those cars up to 12 years old face an additional 20 per cent duties and cars older than 12 years are taxed at 50 per cent. Likewise, commercial vehicles weighing over 10 tonnes and which are older than 15 years attract a 20 per cent excise duty.
