On December 9, 2013, the Council of the European Union adopted Regulation no. 16241/13, suspending duties on jet fuel imports (HS Code 2710.19.21) for at least five years as from January 1, 2014.
The measure was taken to avoid an increase in jet fuel prices that would otherwise have occurred because of the new GSP (Generalised System of Preferences), set to enter into force on that date. The new GSP would exclude a number of jet fuel exporting countries from preferential access to the EU common market. As EU refineries are unable to sufficiently increase their production, the duty has been suspended in order to avoid price increases.
Previously, the tariff stood at 4.7%.
