Import ban

On 30 July 2013, the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) in Pakistan, decided to impose a short term (1 month) ban on duty free import of gold.

The duty free import is part of a government scheme to incentivise exporters of value added gold jewellery who import gold. Recently, as India hiked import duties to curb imports, gold was alledgedly being smuggled through Pakistan with a misuse of this scheme.

On 20 January 2014, the ECC imposed another 30 day ban on the import of all gold into Pakistan.

On 26 February 2014, the import ban was extended until 20 March 2014.

On 11 March 2014, the import ban was extended until 31 March 2014.

The ban was lifted on 17 April 2014.
