On August 22, 2013, Sri Lanka's Ministry of Finance and Planning gazetted Notification no. 1824/22, increasing the 'Special Commodity Levy' (an import tax) on big onions (HS 0703.10.20) and potatoes (HS 0701.90). The levy on onions has been increased from Rs. 30 ($0.22) to Rs. 35 ($0.27) per kilo, whereas the levy on potatoes has risen from Rs. 25 ($0.19) to Rs. 40 ($0.30) per kilo.
The levy on potatoes on onions was reduced on 21 November 2013 (see related measure).
The Special Commodity Levy is a composite duty on the product and no other tax, duty, cess etc. is applicable on the said product while the levy is valid.
