Labour market access

On 22 March 2013, the Ministry of Public Security of Panama announced the creation of three new work permit categories. The new categories are introduced for:

- Italian nationals, who can obtain a work permit of indefinite duration, in accordance with a treaty between the two countries;
- parents of Panamanian nationals, who can renew their work permit on a yearly basis;
- highly-skilled foreign workers holding a bachelor's or post-graduate degree, who can renew their work permit on a yearly basis without proof of professional experience.

Residence permits for the above categories existed already but there was no specific work permit and applicants had to apply for an employer-sponsored work permit subject to regular quotas. The new permits instead are all exempt from quotas and sponsorship requirements.
