On 19 January 2021, the information technologies and communications authority (ITCA) of Turkey imposed an advertising ban on Periscope/Scope over the company’s non-compliance with the law that requires social media platforms to maintain a legal presence in the country.
The new social media law that came into effect in October 2020, required social media platforms accessed over a million times per day in Turkey to appoint a local representative (see related state act). According to the new social media law, if Periscope will not appoint a local representative, the company will face a bandwidth limit by 50% and followed by a bandwidth limit by up to 90%.
Periscope is a live video streaming app owned by Twitter. The ITCA also imposed an advertising ban on Twitter Inc on 19 January 2021. On the other hand, in December 2020, Twitter announced that it would be discontinuing the service on Periscope from 31 March 2021.
