On 19 January 2021, the information technologies and communications authority (ITCA) of Turkey imposed an advertising ban on Pinterest Inc over the company’s non-compliance with the law that requires social media platforms to maintain a legal presence in the country.
The new social media law that came into effect in October 2020, required social media platforms accessed over a million times per day in Turkey to appoint a local representative (see related state act). According to the new social media law, if Pinterest will not appoint a local representative, the company will face a bandwidth limit by 50% and followed by a bandwidth limit by up to 90%.
On 19 January 2021, the ITCA also imposed an advertising ban on Periscope and Twitter (see related state acts).
