Price stabilisation

On 3 November 2020, the department of Mineral Resources and Energy announced the single maximum retail price for illuminating paraffin (SMNRP) at c818 per liter (USD 0.51 per liter). The regulation will be effective from 4 November 2020 to 1 December 2020. Previously the SMNRP was c798 per liter (USD 0.50 per liter).

Paraffin is an alkane hydrocarbon that is used in many industries including medicine, agriculture, and cosmetics. It is also used as fuel for certain engine types, fuel for cooking, and heating oil in central heating systems. Due to its inexpensive nature and the diversity of its appliances, illuminating paraffin is popular in South Africa. The South African government announces the maximum national retail price for illuminating paraffin every month.

On 1 December 2020, the department of Mineral Resources and Energy increased the SMNRP (see related state act).
