Import quota

On August 31st, 2020, the Chinese National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) announced its supplementary cotton import quota for the year in NDRC Announcement 2020/5 (hereafter, 'Announcement').

The supplementary quota of 400,000 tonnes is allocated on top of that obligated by the WTO of 33% of national production (894,000 tonnes).

While the announcement in question concerns a 'supplementary' quota, the equivalent announcements from 2018 and 2019 were for quotas of 800,000 tonnes - 2020's Announcement therefore represents a comparative reduction in the quota.
