On 15 February 2013, the South African Revenue Service (SARS) introduced a 25% import tariff on molluscs (HS codes 0307.39.10 (smoked) and 0307.39.90 (other)) for non-EU/EFTA countries.
The International Trade Administration Commission of South Africa (ITAC) found that an increase in the rate of duty on mussels would enhance the price-competitive position of a domestic industry in its early stages of development, in the face of low-priced competition from abroad. The import tariff applies to the Southern African Customs Union (SACU).
