On 9 February 2013, the Oman Ministry of Commerce and Industry decided to issue licenses only to mining companies that export value added products. Hence the export of mining products in the form of raw materials is not longer possible. The Ministry confirmed that there will be a 'grace period' for existing mining companies, but in the medium term, firms will need to set up processing facilities.
Furthermore, commercial interests of importing countries of the affected minerals (limestone, gypsum and silica sand) will be negatively affected as this export ban will lead to higher import prices.
