On January 22, 2013, the Argentinian Government issued Decree 25/2013 increasing import duties under the Common External Tariff of Mercosur for a list of 100 products. Argentina has charged 95 goods with a maximum tariff rate of 35 per cent. For example, the new maximum tariff rate is levied on the following products (groups): substances for plant protection, automobile tyres, iron fittings for building different types of lamps, metal containers, various canned foods, mowers, heaters, water heaters, ventilators, motorcycles, bakery ovens, refrigerating display cases, dryers for industrial use, drilling equipment, computers, printers, telephones and mobile phones, seeds of forage exclusive cereals, sugar beet, alfalfa, clover, etc.
This state measure has been anticipated after the Mercosur Customs Union accorded that the Member States would increase certain import duties up to their maximum level (bound rates). The increased import duties will be effective immediately and will be valid until December 2014 with an option for an annual renewal.
