On 12 February 2009, the Egyptian Ministry for Trade and Industry announced the imposition of an additional 10 percent import tariff on cold rolled flat tin sheets. Depending on the coating, a minimum charge of US$150to US$250 per tonne would be demanded. According to the ministry, this measure was imposed to fend off imports priced below production cost. The tariff increase lay within the Egyptian bound rate for the affected products.
The measure was originally planned to stay in place until early 2010, but according to a press report, this measure has been abolished on 7 April 2009. The tariff was replaced by a 15 percent subsidy of the total value added of local producers.
In the year prior to the stated measure, no single trading partner has more than the GTA minimum threshold of USD 1 million worth of trade on the affected tariff line.
