Internal taxation of imports

On 20 August 2011, the government of Turkey decreased the registration fee implemented on mobile phones purchased abroad in half from 150 Euro (216 USD) to 75 Euro (108 USD), through a decree of Council of Ministers published in the Official Gazette.

The government of Turkey requires mobile phones which are purchased abroad and brought into Turkey to be registered with the Information Technologies and Communication Authority (BTK). The registration allows the mobile devices to connect to the Turkish GSM network. Short-term visitors and foreign tourist may use their mobile devices up to 120 days through international roaming or with a Turkish SIM card without registration.

On 31 December 2016, the government of Turkey announced further decreasing the registration fee implemented on mobile phones purchased abroad from 15 January 2017 (see related state act).
