Labour market access

On 9 July 2012, the Ministry of Manpower approved a series of restrictions on the dependant privileges for work pass holders. The changes are effective as of 1 September 2012. They introduce a minimum monthly salary to sponsor a spouse or child (only if under 21 years of age) for immigration benefits. A different minimum requirement is set for the different classes of work visas and parents and in-laws are no longer eligible for sponsoring. Such measures are likely to discourage immigration to Singapore in the first place.
