Import tariff

On 15 January 2019, the government of Turkey announced that import tariffs for onions are set to zero percent until February 28, 2019. Onions are classified in the Turkish Customs Tariff Schedule under the customs tariff code 0703.10.19.00.11. Previously the Government of Turkey applied 49.5 percent tariff rate on onions. This decision is taken as a response to high and volatile prices in the domestic market and aims to stabilize the domestic onion prices.

On 28 February 2019, with a Presidential Decree No. 797, the government extended the suspension of import duties until 31 March 2019. Later, on 7 April 2019, with another Presidential Decree No 863, the government once again extended the said period until 30 April 2019.

On 7 January 2020, the government of Turkey imposed a permission requirement on the exports of onions and potatoes (see related state act).
