Tax or social insurance relief
Since 1971 the Pennsylvania Film Office has provided incentives for films and other productions in the state. The law has been amended several times since then, including a 2016 law that expanded the scope of incentivized activities to include various post-production operations. As currently devised, the principal incentive is a 25% tax credit provided to productions that spend at least 60% of their total budget in the state. Eligible productions include a feature film, a television film, a television talk or game show series, a television commercial, a television pilot or each episode of a television series intended as programming for a national audience.
One recipient of this subsidy was How Do You Know Productions, Inc., which in the financial year 2010-2011 (1 July 2010 to 30 June 2011) received a tax credit of $14,979,853 for the movie “How Do You Know.”
