Labour market access

Starting from July 1, 2012, all gas and oil companies in Israel must obtain a written recommendation from the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources in order to sponsor foreign nationals for a B-1 work permit.
In order to obtain the permit, a company must describe the kind of project on which the foreign national will be working and explain the reasons why a foreign national is needed for the position.
The law aims at protecting the Israeli labor market. The discovery of Israeli natural resources is quite recent. Hence the country lacks qualified personnel and the Government wishes to make sure that companies also provide training for locals.
Official reports in English from the Israeli Government have not been found but all major international immigration press agencies report the news.
