On October 3, 2012, the National Treasury of South Africa issued a statement that the government has granted South African Airways (SAA) a 5 billion Rand (US$ 600 million) guarantee for a period of two years starting from 1 September 2012. The guarantee is intended to relieve the acute financial difficulties in which SAA found itself and to ensure that the airline continues to operate as a going concern.
