ANNOUNCEMENT 13 May 2019
May 13th, 2019 - The Chinese government announced an increase in export tariffs on certain goods from the US.
NUMBER OF INTERVENTIONS
PRC State Council Tariffs and Tax Standards Commission, May 13th, 2019. (税委会公告〔2019〕3号 国务院关税税则委员会关于对原产于美国的部分进口商品提高加征关税税率的公告)
On May 13th, 2019, the Chinese State Council Tariffs and Tax Standards Commission announced they would be increasing the additional import tariff imposed on a number of goods from the United States. This follows the US government raising tariffs on a number of goods from China on May 10th, see related state act. These actions are part of a longer series of such actions that started in 2018.
Shuiweihui Gonggao 2019/3 (hereafter, 'Announcement') ordered that supplementary import tariffs on goods originating from the US (in addition to existing MFN tariffs) be raised as follows:
The tariff lines included in the Announcement were originally set in August 2018. At that time, they were divided into four groups, the first and second of which were subject to a 10% tariff, the third and fourth to a 5% tariff.
Although the announcement says that items in the fourth group will 'be subject to a 5% tariff', this was already the case, so the rate will remain the same at 5%.
