In March 2019, the members of SACU initiated a safeguard investigation on imports of certain threaded fasteners of iron or steel. In July 2019, a provisional duty was imposed. The investigation is still in progress.

Safeguard

The safeguard investigation on imports of certain threaded fasteners of iron or steel (i.e. certain bolt ends and screw studs, screw studding, and other hexagon nuts of iron or steel) was initiated on 1 March 2019. The products subject to investigation are classified under the following HS code subheading: 7318.15.41, 7318.15.42, and 7318.16.30. The investigation follows the application lodged by the South African Iron and Steel Institute.

On 26 July 2019, the South African authorities on behalf of SACU imposed a provisional safeguard duty on imports of the subject good. The rate of duty is 102.10%. Certain developing countries are exempt from the imposed safeguard duty.
