On 31 November 2017, Singapore announced that foreign lawyers on the Singapore International Commercial Court Register of Foreign Lawyers are exempted from having a valid work pass, subject to several conditions. One such condition is that the registered foreign lawyer must have already been employed in Singapore, whether by an employer or through self-employment to conduct legal services, as detailed in section 36P of the Legal Profession Act (Cap 161). In addition, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) must be informed of the type of activity required, and its duration.

This also applies to foreign individuals who have been appointed as an International Judge of the Singapore Supreme Court, the Singapore International Commercial Court, or sitting in the Court of Appeals.

The exemption applies for the first 90 days in a year or as allowed by the MOM.

The amendment took effect on 1 November 2017.
