On February 23, 2012, with approval of the Minister of Foreign Trade, Egypt initiated a safeguard investigation on imports of Cotton Textile and Mixed Cotton Textile. (HS Codes 5208, 5209, 5210, 5211, 5212, 5407, 5408, 5512, 5513, 5514, 5515, 5516). The following measure was proposed: Provisional safeguard measure in the form of additional duty of 10% of the CIF value and not less than 3.33 per kilo /L.E net. The provisional measure is expected to last 200 days. On 29 February 2012, the provisional duty entered into force. A series of developing countries are exempted from the measure.

On 10 September 2012, the Minister of Industry and Foreign Trade decided to terminate the safeguard investigation and cease the provisional safeguard measure. The provisional safeguard duty was terminated on 12 September 2012.
